The CSG Leadership Expedition is a program designed to engage 8th and 9th grade girls in a deep inquiry of leadership and outdoor travel. Throughout this 7-day program, the girls will prepare, execute and reflect upon a paddling adventure along the Maine coast, all the while working with the program’s essential question, “How do I lead?”

Our week together will begin at CSG’s coastal campus, an 1840’s era farmhouse located in Freeport, Maine. Here we will spend two days building and exploring our group dynamic, investigating leadership qualities, learning about a variety of leadership styles, and identifying our own strengths and challenges in leading. During this time, we will also be planning and preparing for the four day sea-kayaking trip. The girls will learn the basics of chart and compass navigation, establish a menu and cook system for our wilderness meals, and gather the necessary equipment to live in and travel through coastal wilderness.

On our third day, we will take to the water in tandem kayaks to enjoy the beautiful landscape and rich marine life Maine’s coastline has to offer. While on trip, each girl will deepen her understanding of leadership by taking on designated roles and challenging our community to work as a high-functioning expedition. Through experience, reflection, and action, our girls will work towards cultivating a distinct and dynamic leadership style that can contribute to the achievement of individual and group goals.

After four days of paddling, camping, and exploration, we will return to the CSG farmhouse to clean up, care for our gear, and debrief our trip experience. We will enjoy a warm meal and hearty celebration during our final evening together.

On Monday morning, the girls will pack up and we will welcome parents and friends back to campus to conclude a week rich in learning and adventure!
